Plateau United attacking midfielder, Amos Gyang has stated that his club will prefer to be crowned champions on the pitch for the 2019/20 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The domestic top-flight, other leagues and entire football activities are currently on an indefinite suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gyang said his side’s most fervent prayer is for the global health crisis to come to an end so that the domestic league could restart and be concluded accordingly.

“We want to be champions that would be worthy of the league trophy and will not want to be awarded the crown through boardroom decision because of the crisis the whole world finds themselves at the moment.

“We want to be champions on the field of play except otherwise as a result of discontinuation of the season due to the coronavirus crisis.

“However, our fervent prayer is for the crisis to come to an end so that league action will return to run its full course.

“The pride will be more pronounced winning the league title on the pitch than through some forms of force majeure,” said the former Kano Pillars goal poacher.

Gyang said his side are at the summit on merit and have the capacity to finish the campaign on top despite the reigning champions, Enyimba playing less number of matches.

“Enyimba are being tipped to dislodge us at the top once they are able to play all their outstanding matches.

“Well, football is not arithmetic; there is nothing concrete that Enyimba will win all their outstanding matches.

“Our thinking is that Enyimba will not win all the five outstanding matches so we will continue to be ahead and on top of the log.

“Until Enyimba play all the outstanding matches and win we remain on top and we have the capacity to finish the season on top.

“What is left on the calendar are 13 matches because for 25 matches we fought hard to keep the top spot so we can finish the campaign exactly,” said the former Giwa FC goal king.

Gyang said he tried his hand at in-house equipment aimed at maintaining his fitness level.

“We are used to daily training and competitive games before the coronavirus crisis but now we are indoors doing virtually nothing.

“Right now I do some fitness and walk-out exercises at home, that is not the best for our health but one has to do one’s best to manage the unusual situation,” said Gyang.

Plateau United are at the summit of the 20-team top-flight log on 49 points four above closest challengers, Rivers United.
