Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, Enugu Rangers have announced that star forward, Ifeanyi George has died.
The sad incident took place on Sunday, March 22.
One other Enugu Rangers FC player (a member of the club’s youth team) was in the vehicle that was involved in the fatal accident that claimed the life of George.
The players were travelling for a ten-day break approved by the management of the club following the suspension of the Nigeria Professional Football League following the outbreak of the Corona Virus pandemic.
The late George who was in the vehicle driven by his friend ran into a parked articulated vehicle along Onitsha-Agbor-Benin road, at speed on Sunday.
General Manager of Enugu Rangers FC, Davidson Owumi said the development was “not palatable”.
“We just heard this disturbing news this morning and what we hear is not palatable.
“I await information from my officials that are already on their way to the spot where the accident was said to have taken place.
“We call for prayers in this hour of pains,” Owumi said.
The late George also represented Nigeria at international level.
He was an integral of Nigeria’s African Nations Championships (CHAN) team between 2017 and 2018.
Nigeria’s senior national team’s spokesman, Toyin Ibitoye who worked with the late George closely during the period was quick to voice his sentiments following the attacker’s passing.
“He played the 2018 CHAN qualifiers against Benin Republic.
“He didn’t go with us to Morocco because he was out on trials abroad,” Ibitoye recalled.
He added that the news came to him as a “big shock”.
“This is a big shock. Ifeanyi George was a CHAN Eagles player in 2017/2018.
“He was a very lively player, always giving his 100% to the team.
“I am so heartbroken right now because a very decent soul is gone.
“May God comfort all of us left to mourn him,” he concluded.
