Gernot Rohr has insisted that the home based players must give a positive impression in the CHAN team before they can earn a call up to the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
There have been calls for players who ply their trade in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to be given a chance to play for the Nigerian national team and their wish was granted.
Anayo Iwuala and John Noble of Enyimba and Adekunle Adeleke of Abia Warriors earned a call up during the previous international break.
However, Gernot Rohr has insisted that the rest of the local based players must leave a lasting impression with the Super Eagles B team which consists of the NPFL players before getting to play for the Super Eagles.
“We brought Enyimba players because I saw them, they are good players and Iwuala played twice,” Rohr said.
“He came in during the first match and I think a lot of people were surprised because he played already.
“Normally, we must have a CHAN team which consists of the best local players. It is very difficult for them to come into our A team but now due to the special circumstances and travelling restrictions, we had the opportunity to bring in some local players.
“The two others (John Noble and Adekunle Adeleke) gave us a good impression during training, let’s see what can happen, these three players are very interesting for the CHAN team.
“I think we will soon have a coach who will make the CHAN team prepare for the next CHAN AFCON competition.
“Everybody wants to see the local players but they have to show something in the CHAN team. It is very important that we can have this CHAN team to see the best ones and to eventually give them a chance.”
