Andre Villas-Boas has been officially “suspended” as coach of Marseille after earlier offering to resign in a row over transfers, the French Ligue 1 club said on Tuesday.

“This protective decision had become inevitable given the recent scheming and attitudes shown which have seriously damaged Olympique de Marseille as an institution,” a club statement said.

Villas-Boas, the Portuguese former Porto, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur coach, said at a press conference he wanted to resign after discovering the club had signed midfielder Olivier Ntcham on loan from Celtic against his will.
