Sundowns fail to exploit Chiefs slip

Mamelodi Sundowns failed to capitalise on Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 loss to Bidvest Wits earlier on Sunday (August 30), blowing a chance to take charge of the Absa Premiership title race. Sundowns went down 1-0, to Baroka FC at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Sunday evening.

Sundowns could have gone three points clear with two games to play, but now remain level on 53 points with Chiefs still ahead on goal difference at the top of the table.

It was Cameroon international Bienvenu Eva Nga who broke the hearts of the Amakhosi when he scored in stoppage-time for Bidvest Wits, to claim a 1-0 win at the FNB Stadium and extend an unbeaten league run by The Students to nine matches.

Wits are now on 49 points, four behind both Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns and with a mathematical chance of catching the leaders if they keep dropping points.

Baroka, on the other hand, boosted their chances of survival in the Premier Soccer League, moving two points clear of a relegation playoff spot, thanks to their win over Sundowns.
