Manchester City and Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw in the big game of matchday eight in the Premier League on Sunday (November 7).
The Reds dominated the early exchanges and took the lead in the 13th minute when Mohamed Salah fired a penalty with frightening force past City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes after Sadio Mane was fouled by Kyle Walker. City were on the ropes after that but slowly found a foothold in the game with Raheem Sterling seeing a firm shot stopped unconventionally by the Liverpool goalkeeper, Allison Becker.
The Citizens eventually found a way through in the 31st minute thanks to Gabriel Jesus who reacted brilliantly in controlling Kevin De Bruyne’s intelligent pass before poking home from point blank range.
De Bruyne missed an excellent opportunity to give City the lead for the first time in the game when he missed a penalty in the 42nd minute after his cross into the box moments earlier was handled by Liverpool’s Joe Gomez. Trent Alexander Arnold came close to giving Liverpool the lead just before the break but his brilliantly-taken strike was expertly stopped by Morales in the City goal.
The second half never matched the first in terms of excitement and drama and even though both sides had great chances to put their noses in front, there would be no more goals.
Liverpool moved up to third on the log with 17 points from eight matches, one point adrift of league leaders Leicester, while City are still in the bottom half of the table – in 11th place – with their solitary point picked up against the champions taking them to 12 points from seven matches.
