Hoffenheim thrash Bayern 4-1

TSG Hoffenheim created one of the biggest shocks in Europe this season with a stunning 4-1 victory over European champions, Bayern Munich on Sunday. Bayern came into the game on the back of their latest bit of silverware, the UEFA Super Cup following a 2-1 win over Sevilla in Budapest in midweek.

Robert Lewandowski was rested with youngster Joshua Zirkzee leading the line for the Bavarians. The experiment by Hans-Dieter Flick backfired spectacularly as Die Kraichgauer won comprehensively against their storied opponents.

Ermin Bicakcic opened the scoring for the hosts in the 16th minute with a well-cushioned header off a corner despite the best efforts of Alphonso Davies to keep out the goal-bound effort. Poor defending by Bayern in the 24th minute allowed Hoffenheim to extend their advantage as Munas Dabbur raced goalwards and chipped nonchalantly past Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal.

Bayern were never going to roll over without a fight and they got a lifeline in the 36th minute when Joshua Kimmich expertly curled a 25-yard effort into the top corner. Any hopes of a Bayern comeback were extinguished as Andrej Kramaric netted a late brace to send shockwaves across both the Old World and the New.
