Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has said Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski was extremely unfortunate not to claim last season’s Ballon d’Or.
The Polish attacker enjoyed an incredible season in 2019-20, helping Bayern win the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League treble. He was also the top scorer across all three competitions, firing in 55 goals over 47 games. His lofty accomplishments on the pitch work earned him the UEFA Player of the Year award in September.
However, the organisers of the Ballon d’Or decided to cancel the award this year after the coronavirus pandemic curtailed football seasons around the world and Alexander-Arnold claimed that Lewandowski would have been the odds-on favourite to claim the top gong.
“That was probably a bit unjust. He was destined for that. I’m sure he’ll be disappointed because not many players in this era can say they’ve won it except for those two (Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo),” Alexander-Arnold told goal.
“But he knows what he’s achieved, amazing things, so many trophies. His numbers are scary. Over the last 10 years, there’s only really been him and [Luis] Suarez, as strikers, who have come close to [Messi and Ronaldo] in terms of numbers and consistency.
Trent: “Lewandowski is an unbelievable player, and to be posting those numbers at his age is an amazing achievement. It just shows that footballers are taking it that step further. He’s setting an example for strikers in Europe to try and follow.”
Lewandowski has begun the 2020/21 season brilliantly netting 11 times in 6 Bundesliga games and twice in three UEFA Champions League games this term.
