NBA upgrades Alexandra Basketball courts

The Alexandra Township in Johannesburg benefitted from the Basketball without Borders weekend as the NBA unveiled four newly renovated courts as part of the community outreach 

Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Africa continued at the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) this weekend, and will run through Monday, July 31.

The court in Alexandra is part of the league’s efforts to make the game more accessible across the continent. 

 The court unveiling was followed by a Jr. NBA clinic for 150 boys and girls from the Alexandra community which was facilitated by the current and former NBA and WNBA coaches and players.

On Monday, July 31 which is the final day of the BWB Program at the American International School, the 80 boys and girls will return to the courts to participate in on-court skills stations, played games, and continued to learn from current and former NBA and WNBA players and coaches.

On Saturday afternoon, Miami Heat center and two-time NBA All-Star Bam Adebayo and 2011 NBA champion Ian Mahinmi visited NBA Store and engaged with fans at Sandton City Mall.  

The NBA stars players signed autographs, answered fan questions, and held a brief shootaround session.

More basketball activities continued Sunday morning, with Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and 2018 Coach of the Year Dwane Casey hosting a FIBA coaches’ clinic at AISJ in the afternoon.  The camp will conclude with championship games and BWB Africa 2023 awards tomorrow.
