  • Akwa United and Kano Pillars continue to be at loggerheads for the 2020-21 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title following wins in the latest round of fixtures.

    Akwa remained at the summit of the standings after recording a 2-0 win over Dakkada FC in Uyo derby.

    Charles Atshimene was at the double for the Promise Keepers, netting in the 11th and 48th minute as they increased their points tally to 40 thanks to the victory meanwhile Dakkada dropped to 10th on the log.

    Pillars followed suit to remain joint top of the NPFL table after a 1-0 win against bottom club Adamawa United.

    ‘Sai Masu Gida’ needed a late goal from Rabiu Ali to secure maximum points.

    The captain and veteran midfielder found the back of the net 10 minutes from time after being set up by Ahmed Musa as he made amends for the earlier missed spot kick.

    Kwara United retained third place on the standings with 39 points after a 2-0 victory over Plateau United.

    Second half goals from Jide Fatokun and Jude Steven specifically on 49 and 80 minutes was enough for the Ilorin club to maintain pressure on the league leaders.

    Plateau United dropped to 11th on the standings after being able to amass 28 points this season.

    Rivers United recorded a superb 1-0 win at Rangers International.

    Godwin Aguda’s goal on eight minutes was enough for the Pride of Rivers to register their second away win of the campaign and move to within two points off the league leaders in fourth.

    Following the loss, Rangers dropped to sixth on the log after garnering 33 points.

    Nasarawa United rose to fifth position on the table after a comeback 2-1 win at Wikki Tourists.

    United were a goal down on 22 minutes after Manu Garba gave Wikki the early advantage but goals from Anas Yusuf and Silas Nwankwo in the 33rd and 46th minute respectively helped Bala Nikyu’s side steal the maximum points.

    Heartland are up to seventh on the log after a 2-0 triumph over Katsina United in Owerri.

    Onyedikachi Bright netted the opener on 14 minutes and Kelechi Chimezie was on target in the 26th minute to help the Naze Millionaires consecutive victories following the restart of the league.

    Katsina are languishing slightly above the relegation waters in 16th after the loss.

    Lobi Stars leaped to eighth place thanks to a 2-0 win over FC Ifeanyi Ubah.

    Ossy Martins and Monday Akile netted in both halves to increase the Makurdi club’s points tally to 31 this season.

    FC Ifeanyi Ubah are deep in the relegation zone thanks to the defeat as they remain 19th with 17 points.

    MFM travelled to Ozoro and triumphed over Warri Wolves to rise to 13th on the standings.

    Onyebuchi Ifeanyi and Clement Ogwu were on target for the ‘Olukoya Boys’ as they compounded Wolves’ relegation problems.

    No goals were recorded in the game involving Sunshine Stars and Jigawa Golden Stars at the Akure Township Stadium.
